The Value of Time
(Translated from Hindi)
Professor Anil and Professor Sunil taught Hindi in the same government college. Both were good friends and had been neighbours in Shanti Nagar for many years. Coincidentally, both were about to get promoted. They knew it was a government job and that transfer was inevitable upon promotion. It took some time, but the good news of the promotion arrived. Anil was transferred to a big city, and Sunil received orders for transfer to a town far away from home. Anil and Sunil organised a wonderful joint dinner for the staff members. Both had to go to different places after a few days.
Anil was working at the same college for many years. Life was going on comfortably. He liked the promotion very much, but he was haunted by a strong desire to stay in his city. As soon as he got the transfer, he made rounds of the MLA of the area but all he got were assurances. He made many efforts to stop his transfer, and he tried all possible tricks with the education minister, big and small officers, peons, middlemen, and experts. He also took a real leave for a fake illness many times, but unfortunately, time and luck did not favour him. During this time, he also spent a lot of money. The poor students suffered a loss in their studies because the government did not send any other teacher to the college in his place. The Mahabharata with the college Principal continued separately. Finally, one day he had to give up and move to where he had been transferred.
On the other hand, Prof. Sunil had happily decided to move to the place he had been transferred to with his family. He did not try to stop the transfer even though he had to move far away from his hometown. He felt that his life had come to a standstill by staying in one place, and change is always for the better. If you live in a new place, you will have new experiences and make new friends. Thinking positively, he decided to go there and do something new and different. After a few days, he moved there with his family.
On joining the new job, the student deep inside Sunil awoke. He found an interesting topic in Hindi literature and started pursuing a PhD, diligently. His degree was completed in time due to his hard work and disciplined efforts. The book written by him was released at a program organised in the state capital, which was appreciated by all. Many newspapers published illustrated news about his work. It was discussed and praised a lot on social media. It was natural for his wife, children, friends, acquaintances, and relatives to be happy with this personal achievement.
Anil and Sunil had understood the value of time in their own way and perspective.
